PREMIERE: FREESOULS & ELIJAH YO DIVE THROUGH THEIR 'BLACK THOUGHTS'
Words by Christopher Kevin Au
South-West Sydney collective Freesouls have been causing a considerable buzz in the underground with their allegiance to lyricism and old-school flows, evidenced by their Modern Day Slaves EP that dropped last year. Having been crowned 'Independent Artist of the Week' by FBi Radio, the crew have now called upon their good friend and fellow Sydneysider Elijah Yo for a new single in 'Black Thoughts.' Today, we premiere the single and video, which has been uploaded by Body Bag Media - the pivotal underground platform that's hosted Huskii, Mitchos Da Menace and other abrasive emcees currently shaping Australia's independent scene.
Expanding upon the horrorcore-esque aesthetic of previous singles like 'Voodoo Child', the latest from Freesouls finds them exploring gloomy melody with more direct bars, making for a hypnotic affair that shows their versatile skill set. The accompanying clip features DIY scribbles, hellish flames and a casual alien abduction. "The music for 'Black Thoughts' came about when our boy Jordan heard the beat our boy Tzantza had written, and immediately began freestyling what is now the hook. Once we had that, the rest of the rappers just flowed with the vibe, we also brang in our brother Elijah Yo to truly make this a family affair," the group says.
"The whole song flowed naturally growing into an anthem and is a testament to acknowledging the darkness we face through day-to-day life, in order to grow as a group and as individuals."
