Since diving headfirst into the rap game a little over a year ago, Queensland man King AK has snatched attention from the underground and mainstream media alike. Having generating so much buzz, we decided to speak to the man himself about his AK clothing brand and record label, how he turned a new leaf after prison, and what tunes get the adrenaline pumping during a gym session:

What is an ordinary day in the life of Mr. King AK?

My days vary like anyone’s day does, but most days I’m pretty regimented. I don’t get much rest or down time. Get up when the suns up , go gym or training and start the day off strong, usually then go out for breakfast everyday then head off to start work. I break it up, so daytime is I work on the A-K Clothing business, then night time is when I work on the A-K Records business and music… usually have a video shoot for the brand or a music video for myself or one of the artists every week, plus photo shoots and that pretty regularly. Studio time, meetings, all that shit plus all the other bizzo stuff. So balancing that and all the normal everyday life shit, between seeing my family and my mates and all that, it keeps me pretty busy.

You've gained a lot of online traction in your relatively short music career. What do you think you are bringing to the AUS hip-hop scene that is missing?

Yeah, I’ve only been rapping and doing my own music for 15 months now. Just myself, everyone’s unique and brings their own experiences and energy, that’s one the best things about hip-hop. I’m just me, I reckon I bring something different, cunts can see what I’m about.

You've also gained a lot of online traction from big media outlets. What do you think is the biggest misconception that people have about you?

Yeah bra, people aren’t dumb, they know the media spins shit. I think they can figure it out for themselves, probably a lot people don’t realise that I’m just a normal bloke too; have a family and work hard. I’m just one of the ones that goes after his dreams, not just sit around and do nothing about it.

You said on Instagram that there were days where you slept in cars or gyms with little money. What did those harder times teach you about perseverance and how did they shape who you are today?

Yeah bra, shit was fucked up. I won’t go into all that, but I’ve always been to proud to ask for help. Do things on my own, I got myself there, so I got myself out of it. Legal or illegal, it didn’t matter, I wasn’t gonna stay like that so I did what I had to do. In my experience, hard times can fuck you up mentally , you just can’t let it break you. Do what you gotta do, and keep moving forward.

You previously spent some time in prison. What was the turning point that led you to focus your energy on music & fashion?

I’ve always been motivated and gone after what I want. I think my energy just shifted from what I was doing, towards what I do now when I realised what I want in life . Not sure how or why, but I’m grateful it did.

You also run a record label, what is your selection process when choosing artists to sign? Any other Australian artists you'd like to work with in the future?

We have a few criteria when looking at putting an artist on the team. You gotta be motivated and hungry for it, bring something unique, talented in some aspect, and I gotta like them as a person. All that type of thing.

You also like to hit the gym, what are some of the songs you listen to to get the adrenaline pumping?

I’m pumping Kevin Gates, Yella Beezy, Maino, Meek Mill at gym at the moment. Day-to-day, I like that motivational rap.

How is your dog Bear doing? Has he learnt any new tricks?

Haha, he’s a weapon.

What can we expect from Mr King AK and your team for the rest of 2019?

Same as the last 12 months lad. I’ma keep making moves and putting in the work 24/7, 365. No days off.
