Rebecca Hatch has been establishing herself as one of Sydney’s most soothing and powerful young voices, taking out triple j’s Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative back in 2017 and steadily ascending since then. Hailing from Campbelltown, Hatch has just stepped off a tour with KIAN and Tasman Keith, and is wasting no time in getting back onstage: She’ll be performing at Aquatic Fantasy this Saturday, an event thrown by fellow Sydney artist Princi at Marrickville venue Red Rattler.
Ahead of Aquatic Fantasy, we had a quick chat to Rebecca to find out what to expect. Read below and don your best all-blue outfit this Saturday:
For anyone who hasn't heard Rebecca Hatch... tell us what to expect.
I’m an R&B artist from South-West Sydney. I’m Samoan & Indigenous Australian. I’m young, I’m fresh and if you haven’t heard of me yet, you will definitely know me soon.
You've already played in front of sizeable crowds at NRL matches and the Sydney Opera House at a young age. How do you mentally prepare for those sorts of crowds?
The same way I would prepare for any show; doing my warm ups and drinking heaps of water. I usually like to take a moment to just chill and breathe before I play so I can remained focused!
You're also recently joined KIAN and Tasman Keith on the road - what are some of your tour essentials?
Some my tour essentials are:
Show fits (gotta look fresh)
My Air Max 95s
Lemon Tea & Honey
Heaps of water
My Polaroid camera
Games on my phone
My Mum (she’s iconic)
It seems like Western Sydney is really having a moment with musicians right now. Who are your favourite artists from the area and why?
Firstly, B Wise and Area Famous! I’m still young myself and reasonably new in the scene, so seeing artists like B Wise help pave the way for youngens like myself is something I’m really appreciative of. He’s definitely someone I look up to.
Additionally ONEFOUR are killing it! It’s so dope to be a witness of a movement and watch people give hella love to boys from the West telling their truth, and to be honest, the music just goes hard as. Lastly, a close friend of mine Zion Garcia is definitely one to watch! Balancing HSC and music is no easy job, and he still has time to self-produce and drop projects! Check him out, he’s on the come up.
What are three essential spots in West Sydney/South-West Sydney that everyone needs to visit?
Dumaresq Street Cinemas ($7 movies & an old school cinema, eshay)
Kebabs on Queen
Krispy Kreme Liverpool
You'll soon be playing at Aquatic Fantasy - settle it once and for all, what's the best beach in Sydney?
Growing up in Campbelltown the closest beaches were always in Wollongong, so I’d say Woonona or Wollongong City Beach! South-West things.
Who is the superior animated aquatic character: Spongebob Squarepants or The Little Mermaid?
To be honest, I grew up watching Spongebob every day, so I’ve gotta say Doodlebob. Doodlebob > Spongebob & The Little Mermaid.
What can we expect from your live show at Aquatic Fantasy?
You can expect to hear new and unreleased music. Aquatic Fantasy will be a little teaser of what is in store for the future. You can also expect to be bouncing and having a dope time!
What's on the cards for Rebecca Hatch for the rest of 2019?
I will be releasing new music soon! So there’s a bunch in store including shows with BIGSOUND and Red Bull Festival in Melbourne, although I’m mainly focusing on development so that 2020 will be a year to watch!
