Which rappers/emcees from Australia’s newer generation will make it internationally? It’s a question that seems to pop up with greater frequency, and each week, it seems like we’re closer to having a concrete answer. But while many aspiring artists may be aiming to cause waves in the United States, it’s the UK scene which has been embracing Australia with open arms.

Despite hailing from opposite ends of Australia, Nerve & Shadow are quickly stamping their names in UK circles. Both emcees featured on the ‘UK 2 Australia’ cypher in late 2018, and they also teamed up as a duo for ‘Raw To The Core’, a track featured on prominent grime channel JDZ Media. It’s no surprise that our friends over the pond have been praising Nerve and Shadow with such frequency, given that they’re two of Australia’s most concise and confident emcees spitting over rapid, head-spinning beats.

Now, Nerve and Shadow have fused once more to hop on a globe-trotting remix of ‘Yeah’ by London emcee, Yizzy. The track begins by emphasising its international flavour; “Lewisham to Perth, Brisbane to South London, we’re taking grime around the world!” And so it should, because the implications of global collaborations like ‘Yeah (Remix)’ can’t be understated, especially as grime/underground hip-hop in Australia grows at an unprecedented rate.

The track itself blends tense, relentless production with a hook that almost demands the crowd to scream back - you guessed it - ‘YEAH!’ With all three emcees holding their own, this remix is a quick shot of adrenaline that continues to break down those borders, and another important step showcasing that Australian artists can stand assertively on the world stage.

From here, Nerve goes on tour with Triple One around the country this June, while Shadow will soon drop his first EP with Golden Era Records. In the meantime, listen to the ‘Yeah (Remix)’ below, preferably in a dark room filled with smoke and epileptic lights:
