RELEASE OF THE WEEK: REMI '5 A.M.' FT. WHOSANE
Words by Christopher Kevin Au
“This song goes out to anybody who woke up in a pile of their own shit,” Remi Kolawole writes on Instagram, upon the release of his new single ‘5 A.M.’ The duo REMI - comprised of vocalist Kolawole and producer Sensible J - wrote ‘5 A.M.’ while Kolawole was stuck inside with a heavy bout of the flu, his mind wandering back to a toxic relationship from the past. Still, despite the bacteria-ridden origins of the track and its heavy subject nature, REMI have managed to create yet another impossibly smooth, organic and danceable track; something which the Melbourne tag-team have mastered over the past few years.
This time around, they’ve enlisted the help of Whosane, who laces a hook for ‘5 A.M.’ in buttery fashion, gliding across Sensible J’s intricate production (crafted alongside the similarly-named Silent Jay) with ease. “My brother Whosane has always been one of my favourite people to work with,” Kolawole says. “I love how his mind works in creative settings and I love his voice even more. He only features for eight bars but his presence is felt heavily.”
Kolawole himself displays his vocal abilities on the track, with both pensive bars and memorable, melodic sing-a-long moments; again hitting the slick intersection between hip-hop, R&B and soul that have underpinned REMI’s success thus far. It’s been over a year since we’ve heard new material from REMI, and ‘5 A.M.’ is a worthy return before the group head to Europe to perform alongside Black Milk in August. Let’s hope for an Australian run after that, so we can get our dancing shoes ready:
