After last year’s hugely successful debut, Sissy Ball returned to Carriageworks for another night of style, finesse and powerful self-expression. Curated by multidisciplinary artist, Bhenji Ra, in collaboration with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Red Bull Music, the biggest vogue event in Australia showcased the incredible local talent across a number of different category titles: hands, face, runway, sex siren, vogue femme and female figure.
Performers from the burgeoning Asia-Pacific vogue scene competed for the judge’s attention with their glamorous and elaborate costumes, precise poses, dizzying movements, and fierce runway walks. Finalists were paired with each other to battle it out until one of them was crowned the winner.
Halfway through the night the audience was treated to live performances from local artists Jesswar and Miss Blanks.
Whilst the ballroom scene has reached popular culture, Bhenji reminded the audience that vogue cannot be separated from its significant political context. As she said herself, it was something for, and by, the local queer community of colour; a community that exists far beyond the one event.
